Table Spacing and Seating Guide
Where do you begin, with an empty room and stacks of tables and chairs to arrange for a special event? It can be an overwhelming task. But it doesn't have to be. With these tips, you will be set-up in no time, and your room/tent will look great!
Table Selection and Seating Capacity:
Tall Cocktail Tables: All Seat 2-4 People
2' Round
3' Round
3' Square
Banquet Tables: (Rectangle)
4' Banquet - Seats 4-6 people
6' Banquet - Seats 6-8 people
8' Banquet - Seats 8-10 people
Round Tables:
3' Round - Seats 2-4 people
4' Round - Seats 6-8 people
5' Round - Seats 8-10 people
6' Round - Seats 10-12 people
Square Tables:
3' Square - Seats 4 people
4' Square - Seats 4 people
5' Square - Seats 8-12 people
Party Seating and Space Information:
Cocktail Parties
Usually Standing, can have tall bar stools for some seats
For standing only, plan on 5-6 SQFT needed per person
For partial seating, plan on 10-15 SQFT needed per person
Dinners and Receptions
Everyone will have a seat
Plan on 10-15 SQFT per person
(this is just for dining space, does not include dance floor, bar, other tables etc)
The following formulas and dimensions allow for chair aisles and passage aisles. Increase allowances to accommodate wide traffic aisle(s), columns, service doors and unique room shapes.
ROUND Tables
Allow a minimum of 54", preferably 60", between tables for chair space and food service
Divide the room area in square feet by 10 for a maximum seating count
add an additional 2 sqft per person for increased comfort
RECTANGLE Tables
Allow a minimum of 60", preferably 66", between tables for chair space and food service
Divide the room area in square fee by 8 for a maximum seating count
Add an additional 2 sqft per person for increased comfort
Classroom Style
Allow 36" between tables for seating on one side of table only
Increase allowance for two-sided seating
Divide the "Student" seating area in square feet by 8 for a maximum seating count
Theatre Style or Ceremony Seating
Allow 36" between rows of chairs
Increase allowance for maximum comfort
Divide audience seating area in square feet by 8 for a maximum seating count
